ACATRANCH Cattery was founded in 1987. It is registered with TICA (The International Cat Association), ACFA (American Cat Fancy Association), CFA (Cat Fancy Association), and some others. Louis had a BLACK Burmese some years before. Since we were Novices we looked for a BLACK Burmese, but nobody seemed to know of any. We found a Sable female Burmese and bought her since we could not get a black one. We also acquired Abyssinians. From a book we bought we read about a relative new breed the BOMBAY, a black cat created by breeding Burmese to a Black American Short hair. With this bit of information we found a Bombay breeder in Waco, who we visited and Behold we found our "Black Burmese". We now had three breeds of cats. In 1988 we began to experience the Sphynx. After visiting with Sphynx breeders and their Sphynx we decided we would like to add the Sphynx to our breeding program. In late 1990 we added the Sphynx to our breeding program.
We found that Burmese cats were divided into two categories Traditional and Contemporary lines. The Contemporary's have a Gene call "Burmese Defective Gene" or "Burmese Twining Effect Gene" somewhere in their pedigree. This gene has been studied "to death". It has been determined this gene cannot be bred-out. We made a decision to only use Traditional Burmese in our breeding program. The Sphynx and Devon Rex have an undesirable gene which causes a problem called "spasticity". We are very careful to keep this gene out of our breeding program. A cat can be test-Mated to determine if it carries the Spastic gene, The Defective Burmese Twinning gene CANNOT positively be detected by Test-mating. We use only "Clean" cats in our breeding program. Our goal is to produce only healthy, robust kittens and cats.
