More information On the feline Devon Rex Breed.

The Devon Rex is highly intelligent, extremely affectionate and particularly playful. Its pixie face betrays a devilish sense of mischief. I've heard of Devons who will slide down banisters, play hide-seek and retrieve toys endlessly. They can leap incredible distances and have a penchant for heights. Any time you look upward in our house you can usually see several--on top of the cat trees, bookcases or kitchen cupboards. They adore their humans and are always ready to curl up in your lap for a cuddle or a roughhouse game. They wag their tails like a dog when they're pleased. Visitors to our home are always amazed to be greeted at the door by a bevy of tail-wagging, curly pixies, anxious to get acquainted and make friends. They have a particularly endearing habit (if you're a cat lover , that is) of rubbing noses with you to express their love.

Without exception, every person who has ever had one of our Devons has expressed in glowing terms the love happiness and fun they brought into their lives..

So, if you're looking for a pet that will love you always, keep you on your toes, entertain you endlessly, and truly "light up your life", a Devon Rex is the cat for you! These little cats are hardy and agile, soft-voiced and very easily groomed--hand grooming (petting) is usually all that is required. They do not shed and are said to be hypoallergenic. Most people who are allergic to cats can live very happily with a Devon Rex and experience no allergic reactions whatsoever.

The Devon Rex originated in 1960 in Buckfastleigh in the county of Devon, England. There a stray tortie and white female cat who had been befriended by Miss Beryl Cox mated with a feral curly-coated male cat who lived nearly in an abandoned tin mine. When her litter was born, one of the male kittens was curly-coated like his father. This kitten was the famous Kirlee, the ancestor of all Devon Rex. Kirlee was first mated with offspring of Kallibunker, a curley-coated cat found in nearby Cornwall, as it was thought the cats were related. However, all of the kittens were straight-haired. Repeated breedings with other Kallibunker descendants produced all straight-haired kittens. Since it was obvious that these were two different genes, Kallibunker's descendants were learned Gene I (Cornish Rex) and Kirlee was known as Gene 2 (Devon Rex).

The Devon Rex is a unique breed, both in appearance and personality. Its large eyes, short muzzle, prominent cheekbones and huge lowset ears make up the characteristic elfin look. When viewed from the front, the head is delineated by a narrowing series of three distinct curves: outer edges of ears, cheekbones, and whisker pads. A cat of median frame, the Devon Rex is well covered with short full-bodied, wavy fur. Although many kittens molt shortly after birth, their coats usually starts growing back within a few months. The International Cat Association (TICA) standard for the Devon Rex states that allowances may be made for lack of full coat development on kittens. The coat is of a distinctive texture, it feels like soil velvet to the touch, as the mutation causing its wavy coat is found in no other breed. Ear muffs are the fluffy hairs at the base of their cars and many Devon also have tufts on the tops of their cars. Their whiskers arc curly and brittle, and sometimes not there at all. The Devon Rex are accepted in all colors and patterns including the colorpoints.
